Bandung - The rapid development of communication technology requires the media industry and journalists to constantly adapt dynamically. However, the transition from the print media era to digital platforms must not erode the basic principles and integrity of journalistic work.
This was emphasized by Tantan Sulthon Bukhawan, a prominent press figure who is currently running for General Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) of West Java for the 2027-2031 period. The man, who has been active in the press world since the early 2000s, stressed the importance of improving journalists' competence so they can walk hand in hand with technological advancements without losing direction.
According to Tantan, the presence of social media often causes raw information to spread faster than conventional media reporting. This phenomenon poses a unique challenge for journalists. However, he reminded that speed in presenting news must not compromise accuracy and the value of public responsibility.
Tantan's career journey, which began in 2002 as a journalist at Harian Umum Mitra Dialog (Pikiran Rakyat Group), continued to Harian Seputar Indonesia (Sindo), and finally served as Editor-in-Chief of InilahKoran, provides a deep perspective on the ups and downs of the press industry. For him, the core essence of a journalist is the ability to listen, verify facts, and present information clearly.
He is optimistic that through consistent capacity building, the journalism profession will remain an important pillar in educating the public. Tantan views journalism not just as a job, but as a space of dedication to become an agent of change that benefits the wider community.
