The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Great Hall has issued a strategic policy to completely close the hiking trail of Mount Semeru from August 7 to 18, 2026. This decision was made as a sign of deep respect for the sacred Hari Raya Karo ritual observed by the indigenous Tenggerese people.
Head of the TNBTS Great Hall, Rudijanta Tjahjah Nugraha, explained that the policy was officially established through Announcement Letter Number PG.16/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2026. This measure comes in response to an official request from the Ranupani Village Government, Lumajang Regency, to ensure the smooth and solemn execution of religious processions in the area.
In accordance with this new regulation, all hiking activities on the highest mountain in Java must end on Thursday, August 6, 2026. TNBTS issued strict instructions requiring all hikers on the trail to descend and report to the main post no later than Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB. The hiking trail is scheduled to reopen to the public on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
For prospective hikers affected by this closure policy, the management is providing dispensations in the form of a rescheduling facility for those who had previously booked. Technical information regarding the rescheduling process will be communicated personally via WhatsApp to the group leader registered in the online reservation system.
The TNBTS authority emphasized that the closure applies only to hiking activities on Mount Semeru. Meanwhile, general tourism activities and camping in the Ranu Regulo area will remain open and operate normally. All concerned parties are urged to comply with these rules to maintain comfort and respect local community traditions during the observance of Hari Raya Karo.
