A proud achievement was once again recorded by the academic community of Universitas Halu Oleo (UHO). Three medical students from the university successfully created an innovative health screening tool called SI-AKUR (Urinary and Reproductive Health Analysis Indication System), which led them to win First Place in the national MEDSMOTION 2026 event.
The team, consisting of Cressendo Reifaldi, Aldu Three Bintang Aksa, and Nabil Syayyid Alfatih, successfully conquered the educational video competition organized by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. Their innovation was deemed superior because it combines the use of local natural ingredients with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect urinary and reproductive health disorders.
Team member Cressendo Reifaldi explained that the development of SI-AKUR was motivated by the high rate of delayed treatment of urinary diseases in the community. Limited access to medical facilities and low public awareness to undergo regular check-ups were the main driving factors for creating this practical early detection tool.
Technically, SI-AKUR relies on biomarker strip paper extracted from native Indonesian herbal ingredients, such as butterfly pea flower, turmeric, and areca nut. Users simply dip the strip into a urine sample to see a color change reaction indicating acidity (pH), inflammation, and nitrite levels in the body.
Once the color change occurs on the strip, users can scan it using a dedicated app integrated with artificial intelligence. The AI will analyze the visual color data of the strip along with the answers to a symptom questionnaire filled out by the user. The app then processes the data to provide an initial diagnosis, medical educational advice, and recommendations for the nearest healthcare facility.
Despite having achieved national success, the FK UHO team emphasized that the SI-AKUR project still requires a series of clinical trials and further development before being widely applied. They hope that the artificial intelligence system in this app can continue to be perfected through collaboration with academics, medical practitioners, and the health industry sector to provide real benefits to the community.
