The name of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus has emerged as one of the figures with the most comprehensive track record on Indonesia's public stage. Starting from a military career in the red beret corps, he now holds a strategic position as Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs in President Prabowo Subianto's administration. This journey reflects the transformation of a professional soldier into a statesman who understands the intricacies of political dynamics and national defense.

Born in Manado on July 27, 1957, Lodewijk's youth was forged in various regions of Sulawesi before he finally decided to enter the Military Academy, graduating in 1981. His military career in Kopassus was filled with crucial assignments, including leading the Special Force 81 Counter-Terrorism (Sat-81/Gultor) unit up to his peak as the 24th General Commander of Kopassus. Under his leadership, he was known to be progressive in integrating human rights standards into elite force doctrines and reopening international military diplomacy that had been stalled.

Beyond his tactical sharpness in the field, Lodewijk also has a deep spiritual side. His decision to convert to Islam in the middle of his military career is referred to as a turning point that shaped his character and life principles. This experience, according to him, gave him steadfastness in making difficult decisions—a quality he later brought when entering the political arena through the Golkar Party after retiring from the military in 2015.

His transition to the political world was exceptionally smooth. In a short time, he was entrusted with the position of Secretary-General of the Golkar Party and later took on the responsibility of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI). This strategic placement further enriched his insights into legislation and public policy, especially while serving on Commission I, which oversees defense and intelligence affairs.

Now, under the coordination of the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Lodewijk plays a vital role in maintaining the harmonization of national stability amid dynamic geopolitical challenges. His cross-sector experience—ranging from military command and political organization leadership to parliamentary leadership positions—makes him the right figure to assist the government in managing the current complexities of national security.
