The international alpinism world is in deep mourning following reports of the death of Nirmal Purja, the legendary Nepalese climber. Purja and nine other climbers lost their lives after being struck by a massive avalanche during an expedition on Pakistan's Broad Peak, a giant summit standing at 8,051 meters above sea level.
The deadly accident occurred on Thursday (30/7/2026) local time. Elite Exped, the expedition company led by Purja, confirmed the sad news through an official statement on social media. Following the incident, Pakistani rescue authorities immediately deployed search teams to the location, though evacuation efforts were initially hampered by extreme weather and highly dangerous terrain.
By Saturday, rescue teams had successfully recovered several bodies from the avalanche site. The government of the Gilgit-Baltistan region later released the identities of some of the victims who had been identified, including Nepalese climber Pur Bahadur Gurung, Nadhira Al Harthy from Oman, and Mallory Geis, a United States citizen.
Nirmal Purja was one of the most iconic and influential figures in modern mountaineering history. The former British Army Gurkha special forces soldier made history in 2019 by successfully summiting the world's 14 highest peaks (above 8,000 meters) in just 189 days. The story of his incredible struggle and physical endurance was later captured in the popular Netflix documentary "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible".
Nepal's Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, expressed his deepest condolences over the passing of Purja and his fellow climbers. He emphasized that the dedication and courage shown by the victims will always inspire the climbing world. This heartbreaking tragedy on Broad Peak serves as a stark reminder of the immense risks and extreme dangers that constantly lurk on the world's highest peaks.
