Mount Mindung, located in Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province, South Korea, is currently on the rise and has become a new favorite destination for travelers, especially Generation Z. Officially known as Mindungsan or "bald mountain," this natural tourist area suddenly went viral on various social media platforms thanks to its unique and eye-catching landscape.
Unlike the majority of mountains in South Korea which are covered in dense forests, the peak of Mindungsan offers an unobstructed open view because it is almost completely devoid of trees. In its place, visitors are treated to a vast expanse of green meadows and the presence of a deep blue natural pool located near the mountain peak.
The unique pool is called a doline, a natural depression formed by the erosion of limestone by rainwater and groundwater over thousands of years. When summer arrives, high rainfall fills this depression to form a small, dark blue lake that contrasts with the surrounding greenery. This contrasting scenery is the main magnet for tourists, displacing the popularity of the autumn season which is usually dominated by views of dry silver grass fields.
The history behind the formation of the mountain's "bald" character is also quite interesting. Long ago, this area was a shifting agricultural zone where local farmers frequently burned the forest to clear land for cultivation. The periodic fires that occurred over many years inhibited the growth of large trees, eventually leaving behind a vast meadow. Who would have thought that an area once considered barren has now transformed into a highly valuable natural tourism asset for the Gangwon region.
Although it offers a highly photogenic and stunning panoramic view at the peak, tourists must prepare themselves physically. The hiking trail to the summit of Mount Mindung is known to be quite challenging and requires extra effort, providing a unique sense of adventure for anyone wishing to witness its beauty firsthand.
