Hikers now have a new alternative to conquer the peak of Mount Kerinci. The South Solok Regency Government, together with the Kerinci Seblat National Park Authority (BB TNKS), has officially agreed to open a new hiking trail through the South Solok region in West Sumatra. This agreement was marked by the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for the development of nature tourism in the area.
This cooperation covers the utilization of 55 hectares of land spread across the utilization zone, rehabilitation zone, and parts of the wilderness zone of TNKS in Sangir District. This development plan is designed for a period of four years with an option to extend. This step expands access options for nature lovers beyond the classic route that was previously popular.
The Head of the Kerinci National Park Authority (BB TNKS) Section, David, confirmed that with this official opening, hikers now have two official route options: via Kersik Tuo in Kayu Aro and via South Solok. However, the South Solok trail has significantly different characteristics. This route requires a travel time of about 4 days and 3 nights due to its longer path, unlike the Kersik Tuo trail, which can generally be completed in 2 days and 1 night. Both trails will eventually meet at the iconic landmark, Tugu Yudha.
The Regent of South Solok, Khairunas, stated that the opening of this new trail is not only aimed at facilitating hikers but is also designed as a catalyst for local economic growth. This sustainable tourism sector is expected to empower local communities by opening new business opportunities, ranging from guiding services, porters, homestays, culinary offerings, to transportation and local MSME products.
The management assures that the development of supporting infrastructure and tourism promotion on this new route will continue to prioritize conservation principles to preserve the tropical forest ecosystem. As the highest mountain in Sumatra, standing at 3,805 meters above sea level (masl), Mount Kerinci, which is part of Indonesia's Seven Summits, is predicted to attract even more domestic and foreign tourists with the introduction of this alternative route.
