The initial step in developing high-achieving athletes in the Southwest Papua region officially began through the Extraordinary Provincial Sports Council (Musorprovlub) of KONI Southwest Papua in 2026. This important meeting, held at the Rylich Panorama Hotel, Sorong City, on Wednesday (29/7/2026), aimed to elect a new leader and unite commitments for professional sports management.

The General Chair of Central KONI, Marciano Norman, who attended the forum in person, invited all local sports figures to unite their ranks. According to him, success in producing world-class athletes highly depends on the strength and professionalism of the organization. He hoped that this Musorprovlub would bring forth strong leadership fully supported by all regional sports elements for collective progress.

Furthermore, Marciano emphasized that the main essence of this forum is not merely a change of leadership, but the concrete continuity of achievement development. He believes that the land of Southwest Papua holds tremendous potential for sports talent. The main target is to produce new champions in prestigious events such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics from this eastern region of Indonesia.

Echoing Central KONI, the Governor of Southwest Papua, Elisa Kambu, urged the forum to serve as a platform for consolidating strength, rather than a counterproductive debate. He reminded that unity is the key to ensuring that young talents in Southwest Papua can be optimally nurtured to bring honor to the region and the nation.

Elisa also highlighted the importance of multi-sector collaboration in developing the sports world. Given regional budget constraints, strategic partnerships with various external parties are considered crucial for the sustainability of coaching and development programs. The regional government is committed to providing support within its fiscal capacity, but collective cooperation remains the main driving force for achieving success.
