Commission I of the Medan City Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) has declared its full support for the firm actions taken by law enforcement, particularly the Medan City Police (Polrestabes), in combating drug trafficking in nightlife venues (THM). This move comes in response to recent police operations that successfully uncovered the distribution of liquid narcotics (vape liquid) at a nightlife venue in the Setia Budi Road area, Medan Sunggal.
Chairman of Commission I of the Medan DPRD, Reza Pahlevi Lubis, emphasized that the police must thoroughly investigate drug trafficking networks in nightlife venues indiscriminately. The Golkar Party politician requested that business owners proven to facilitate or allow transactions of illicit goods on their premises be given severe sanctions, including the permanent revocation of their operational licenses by the Medan City Government (Pemko).
Accompanied by several commission members including Saiful Bahri, Fauzi, and Andres Pandapotan Purba, Reza shared his views on the sidelines of the Medan DPRD Working Meeting in Sibolangit. In addition to strict sanctions to create a deterrent effect, he also urged authorities to be transparent in releasing case investigation results to the public and to expand similar operations to other nightlife venues.
Echoing these sentiments, Member of Commission I of the Medan DPRD, Fauzi, highlighted the high level of vulnerability to drug trafficking in Medan City, which has currently become highly concerning to the public. According to the Gerindra Party politician, the threat of these addictive substances no longer distinguishes social classes and has even targeted children and the younger generation.
To optimize these eradication efforts, Fauzi suggested that the police should not act alone. He encouraged close and integrated collaboration between law enforcement officers, the local government executive, the legislature, and all elements of society to break the chain of drug trafficking in Medan City.
