The classic hiking trail of Mount Raung via Sumberwringin Village, Bondowoso Regency, East Java, has now become a favorite among nature lovers. During the holiday season, the number of visitors recorded an increase of up to three times compared to regular days, with tourists coming not only regionally, but also from various provinces in Indonesia to abroad.
Kurniawan, one of the climbing managers, revealed that the charm of Mount Raung as part of Java Island's Seven Summits and the beautiful panorama of its crater are the main attractions. Climbers have varied travel preferences, ranging from camping setups to the tek-tok (one-day peak-bagging) method for those who want to conquer the 3,332-meter-high peak at once.
To ensure safety, managers require all prospective climbers to attend a briefing session before starting their journey. This protocol is strongly emphasized, especially to anticipate novice climbers and ensure the physical health of every individual so that the risk of mountain accidents can be minimized.
On the other hand, the surge in climbing activity brings fresh air to the local economy in Sumberwringin District. Head of Sumberwringin District, Probo Nugroho, stated that the motorcycle taxi service sector (ojek), equipment rental, and local homestays experienced a significant increase in turnover, with ojek drivers able to pocket up to IDR 500,000 per day.
Nevertheless, the local government urges the public and climbers to remain vigilant regarding the dynamics of the mountain's volcanic activity. Synergy between developing supporting facilities, environmental conservation through mountain clean-up activities, and compliance with the directions of observation post officers is the main key to the sustainability of the tourism sector in the area.
