Climbing activity on Mount Merapi via the Selo route has reportedly seen a surge in visitors recently. This phenomenon has drawn serious attention from the park authority, the Mount Merapi National Park Hall (TNGM), given the volcanic activity status that still requires high vigilance.
The TNGM officially reiterated that the route is currently not recommended for climbing. This step was taken as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of hikers while preserving the ecosystem in the summit area, which is highly sensitive to human disturbance.
In addition to safety factors, the management emphasized the importance of adhering to established safe zone regulations. Hikers are asked not to force their way into areas that are still declared off-limits to avoid unwanted risks amid Mount Merapi's current activity status.
To date, TNGM continues to maintain strict field surveillance. The public and climbing communities are urged to always monitor official information regarding the volcano's status through information channels provided by relevant agencies before planning activities in the conservation area.
