The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially announced a strategic joint commitment with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the education and research sectors. This agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting held in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7/2026), as a concrete effort to enhance human resource capacity in both countries.
One of the main points in the memorandum of understanding is the plan to establish world-class educational institutions from India in Indonesia. Both leaders agreed to pioneer the establishment of an Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) campus and conduct technical explorations for the construction of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in the country. This initiative is projected to serve as a catalyst for accelerating the mastery of modern technology and management for Indonesia's young generation.
In addition to physical educational infrastructure development, the government is also committed to increasing academic mobility by expanding quotas for Indonesian students studying in India. This step is expected to strengthen knowledge exchange and deepen research collaboration relevant to current global challenges.
Furthermore, the collaboration between the two countries touches not only on technocratic aspects but also targets the realm of cultural diplomacy. The Indonesian government positively welcomes the restoration project of the Prambanan Temple Compound and the designation of the 2026–2027 period as the Tagore–Dewantara Year. This program was initiated to commemorate the centenary of the historic meeting between Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore and the Father of Indonesian Education, Ki Hajar Dewantara.
President Prabowo emphasized that the entire series of cooperation is a manifestation of the long-standing civilizational ties between Indonesia and India. He expressed optimism that the implementation of this agreement will make a significant contribution to educational advancement and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations in the future.
