Jakarta Police are intensively investigating alleged corruption and money laundering in coal trading. As part of the investigation, investigators have questioned at least 15 witnesses, including prominent property tycoon Tan Kian.
Head of Public Relations for Jakarta Police, Senior Commander Budi Hermanto, emphasized that Tan Kian's status in this case remains solely as a witness. To date, the police have not named the businessman a suspect in the case, which implicates major names such as PT PLN, Asabri, Krakatau Steel, and PT CBS-KNI.
This legal process stems from searches at 13 different locations starting Wednesday (8/7/2026). Police officers managed to seize staggering assets, including IDR 67 billion in cash in the Cipete area, South Jakarta, as well as IDR 476 billion and 74 kilograms of gold bars at a residence in Sentul, Bogor. Currently, the investigative team is probing the origins of these assets and the connection between the estate manager and the evidence found.
Behind this questioning, Tan Kian is widely known as a central figure behind Century Properties Group Indonesia. He is the developer behind various premium projects in Jakarta, such as Pacific Place, JW Marriott, and The Ritz-Carlton. His track record in the real estate sector includes the construction of prestigious office buildings and exclusive residential areas that have become capital city landmarks.
This is not the first time Tan Kian's name has come under legal scrutiny. Since 2008, he has been questioned several times in cases involving PT Asabri and PT Jiwasraya. Nevertheless, Tan Kian's legal counsel stressed that all of their client's business partnerships, including transactions with figures like Benny Tjokrosaputro, have undergone legal scrutiny and been declared in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
