Special Advisor to the President for Manpower and Labor Welfare, Said Iqbal, emphasized the government's step to immediately follow up on reports regarding mass layoffs hitting Tokopedia. In the near future, his team will schedule a direct meeting with the company's management and worker representatives to get a complete picture of the situation on the ground.
According to Said Iqbal, the government is committed to remaining objective and not simply taking information from one side. He stressed the importance of understanding the unique characteristics of the digital economy sector, which differ from conventional manufacturing industries. An in-depth investigation into this case is planned to be conducted together with the Ministry of Manpower to ensure whether there were any labor rights violations in the restructuring process.
"The government will be present to protect workers' rights while maintaining a healthy business climate. If any legal violations are found, the state will take firm action. However, we will also consider market dynamics and business models underlying the company's decisions so that the solution reached remains constructive for business sustainability," Said stated in an official release.
Previously, rumors circulated widely regarding employee downsizing at Tokopedia as the company moves to align its research and development (R&D) organization under TikTok. TikTok stated that these adjustments are part of efforts to strengthen long-term growth for their e-commerce ecosystem, although reports of significant layoffs have triggered anxiety internally within the company.
The government hopes this constructive dialogue approach will serve as the best solution, drawing on previous labor dispute resolution track records that successfully minimized the impact of layoffs for thousands of employees. Said reaffirmed that the core principle of resolving this issue remains grounded in ground realities, legal compliance, and the protection of workers' welfare in Indonesia.
