RSUD Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie (AWS) Samarinda continues to strengthen its position as the main health referral center in Kalimantan. Recently, the hospital introduced Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) technology, bringing a breath of fresh air to the treatment of cancer patients in the region.
Acting Director of RSUD AWS, Dr. Mazniati, revealed that this nuclear medicine-based service is the most cutting-edge diagnostic innovation available outside of Java Island. The presence of this device is expected to save time and cost for the community, who previously had to travel long distances to get similar examinations.
Unlike conventional scans such as MRI or CT scans that focus on organ structure, PET/CT technology is capable of visualizing cellular metabolic activity in the body. The high level of accuracy allows the medical team to determine cancer staging, detect tumor locations precisely, and better monitor the effectiveness of therapies the patient is undergoing.
Since its launch on April 1, 2026, this service has been accessible to the general public. Regarding coverage through the BPJS Kesehatan program, the management of RSUD AWS stated that the administrative synchronization process is currently underway so that the service can soon be accessible to all segments of society.
As a form of commitment to transparency and quality improvement, the hospital has also opened channels for feedback and complaints. This aims to ensure that the standards of services provided remain relevant and meet public expectations for quality and humane healthcare.
