The implementation of the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS) at Samarinda Integrated Public School 2, Palaran, took a different approach than usual. The educational institution, which focuses on nurturing children from vulnerable groups, did not only introduce the school environment but also conducted in-depth academic assessments and free health screenings.
This strategic step was intentionally taken to map out the initial abilities of the new students. This is because most students at this school come from diverse backgrounds, ranging from children who dropped out of school to those who have never received any formal education at all.
The Head of the Samarinda Public Elementary School, Pahrizal, explained that the assessment, which runs for two weeks, is crucial for determining class placement. Teachers test the students' basic literacy and numeracy skills, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, to formulate the learning approach best suited to the children's psychological condition.
In addition to academic readiness, the physical condition of the students is also a primary concern through the Free Health Check (CKG) program. Before moving into the dormitory facilities, every student is required to undergo a comprehensive physical examination, including measurements of height, weight, head circumference, and waist circumference.
These checks serve as an early detection for stunting and for the continuous monitoring of child growth and development. The school will later compile all this physical health data to report periodically to the Ministry of Social Affairs, ensuring that the boarding school coaching program runs optimally for the future of these children.
