The Palestinian sports world is in deep mourning after the Secretary General of the Palestinian Sports Media Association, Mustafa Siyam, revealed distressing data regarding the impact of the military aggression in the Gaza Strip. Since the escalation of the conflict began on October 7, 2023, it is recorded that 1,012 Palestinians involved in the sports, youth, and scout movement sectors have lost their lives due to attacks by Israeli occupation forces.
The data highlights the massive losses suffered by the local football community. According to Siyam, more than 560 individuals, including professional players, coaches, and official referees affiliated with the Palestinian Football Association, have been recorded as casualties during this period.
In addition to the loss of human resources, sports infrastructure in Gaza has also suffered systematic damage. Siyam mentioned that official sports facilities are now flattened or unusable. In fact, stadiums that previously served as competition arenas have now been repurposed as emergency shelter centers for thousands of displaced families who lost their homes due to ongoing airstrikes.
The humanitarian situation in the region continues to deteriorate as military operations persist, ignoring various international appeals and orders from the International Court of Justice. To date, the total number of dead and injured on the Palestinian side has exceeded 239,000, with the majority of victims being vulnerable groups such as women and children, while tens of thousands of others are still reported missing under the rubble of buildings.
Although ceasefire efforts have been pursued, reports on the ground show that these agreements are frequently violated by Israeli forces, creating permanent security uncertainty for civilians in Gaza.
