The pulse of athletic activity at Teladan Stadium in Medan, North Sumatra, has never faded. From dawn to dusk, this historic stadium remains a vibrant public space for local residents to exercise, from morning jogging and cycling to playing soccer. Designed by architect Lim Bwan Tjie, the stadium has maintained its role as a vital center of fitness for citizens since it was first inaugurated.
Established in 1953 for the 3rd National Sports Week (PON III), Teladan Stadium holds a powerful historical legacy for the nation's sporting world. The venue is not only the legendary home base for the Perserikatan-era PSMS Medan club, but it also hosted international friendly matches against elite European clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal FC, and UC Sampdoria between 1970 and 1996, as well as serving as the arena for the legendary Marah Halim Cup tournament.
To preserve this historic heritage and upgrade the sporting facilities, the Medan City Government initiated a comprehensive revitalization project starting in February 2024. Involving an investment of approximately IDR 510 billion in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, the project aims to rejuvenate the entire stadium area to meet the standards of the International Association Football Federation (FIFA).
Infrastructure improvements include the reconstruction of all spectator stands with a new capacity of 20,080 single seats. In addition to the main match facilities, the area surrounding the stadium is also being redesigned into greener, more beautiful open spaces that are comfortable for the public to enjoy recreation.
Entering the final stage of completion, Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Waas reaffirmed the local government's commitment to accelerating the project so that it can be optimally used as soon as possible. Although physical work is not yet fully completed, Teladan Stadium was trusted to host matches for the 2026 AFF U-19 Championship behind closed doors, earning positive appreciation from players for its modern design.
Positive responses have flowed from local residents who feel the direct impact of the stadium's cleaner and more organized environment. High hopes also come from the PSMS Medan Fans Club supporters group, who long for their beloved team, the Ayam Kinantan squad, to soon return to play in their historic home ground.
