Inclusive secondary education is now closer to the community on the slopes of Mount Merapi, Klaten Regency. The presence of SMA Negeri 1 Kemalang, which started its inaugural School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS), marks a new historical milestone in expanding access to learning in this outermost region.
The school, inaugurated by the Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, in May 2026, immediately attracted high enthusiasm from local residents. In its inaugural academic year, SMAN 1 Kemalang enrolled 108 new students. Furthermore, to prevent school dropouts, the administration also accommodated an additional 12 students from surrounding villages such as Tegalmulyo, Balerante, Panggang, and Sidorejo.
Acting Principal of SMAN 1 Kemalang, Arik Sulistyorini, revealed that the presence of the first state high school in Kemalang District has been eagerly awaited by residents. By implementing the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), the school is committed to organizing safe and enjoyable learning. Basic infrastructure such as classrooms, a physics laboratory, and access to clean water have been prepared to support teaching and learning activities.
For the students, the existence of this new school shortens the commute, which has been the main obstacle until now. Alviano Rizky Fernando, one of the new students, expressed his gratitude for no longer having to travel far or spend a lot of money to attend school outside the district. A similar sentiment was shared by Dhea Noviyanti, who was happy that she can now access quality education close to home.
Similar joy was felt by the students' parents. Rosanti, a resident of Tlogowatu Village, admitted she feels more at ease as she can now monitor her child's school activities more easily. The Central Java Provincial Government's step in establishing a school on the slopes of Merapi is considered highly strategic in creating equal educational quality and easing the economic burden on the local community.
