Volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the waters of the Sunda Strait, has reportedly surged significantly over the past week. A sequential increase in eruption intensity on July 2, 3, and 5, 2026, has prompted relevant authorities to raise the volcano's status from Level II (Advisory) to Level III (Alert).
Data from the Volcano Observation Post recorded plumes of volcanic material reaching heights of 10 to 200 meters above the peak. In addition, seismic instruments detected continuous tremor earthquakes with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters, indicating fairly intense magmatic activity below the surface.
As an anticipatory measure, a joint team consisting of BPBD, Basarnas, and the Fire and Rescue Service (Damkarmat) of South Lampung has enhanced coordination and monitoring in Hargo Pancuran Village. This mitigation step aims to ensure operational readiness if conditions at the volcano require an urgent evacuation for coastal residents.
Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post, Suwarno, explained that although this series of eruptions is part of the volcano's growth phase, heightened vigilance is absolutely necessary. The public is urged to remain calm and rely only on official information to avoid panic caused by unverified news.
Authorities have issued a strict prohibition for fishermen and tourists against approaching the active crater within a 3-kilometer radius. This restriction is enforced to minimize the danger from incandescent rock fragments, hot volcanic material, and toxic gas exposure that could be released from the crater at any time.
