Eruptive activity affecting Mount Anak Krakatau since early July 2026 has not dampened the public's enthusiasm for vacationing in the coastal areas of South Lampung Regency, Lampung. Although the volcano's status was raised to Alert (Level III) on July 2, 2026, the pulse of the tourism and shipping sectors in the Sunda Strait remains stable and continues to operate as usual.
Haikal, a tourism service business operator in South Lampung, revealed that tourist visits during this year's school holiday period have been maintained. According to him, travelers prefer visiting beaches in the Kalianda and Bakauheni areas, which are considered safe and outside the danger radius. For safety reasons, he and other tourism operators have canceled direct tour packages to the Anak Krakatau area since the beginning of this month.
Echoing Haikal, a tourist from Palembang, Aldi (40), admitted that he still chose South Lampung as a family destination due to its easy accessibility via the Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar Toll Road. He ensured that he had independently checked disaster information and selected destinations well beyond the 3-kilometer radius from the summit, in accordance with recommendations from relevant authorities.
The local government, through the South Lampung Fire and Rescue Department, continues intensive monitoring in coordination with related agencies. Rully Fikriansyah, a Head of Division at the agency, emphasized that so far there have been no significant obstacles to ship operations or tourist comfort along the coastal shores of Lampung.
Data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) indicates a significant increase in volcanic activity since June 2026. Although continuous eruptions with ash columns reaching 100 to 250 meters high are recorded on seismograms, the public is still urged to comply with the 3-kilometer exclusion zone from the eruption center to anticipate the threat of incandescent rock fragments, pyroclastic flows, and ash rain.
