Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) is expanding its international research horizons by exploring a strategic partnership with the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, China. This cooperation focuses on the development of marine conservation technology through a project titled "China–Indonesia Marine Ecological Ranching Technology Cooperation Project," which will run from January 2027 to December 2029.
The initiation of this collaboration began with an invitation from the lead researcher of the project, Dr. Yuan Huarong, to USK academic, Prof. Ir. Muhammad Irham. Under the plan, the project will implement the concept of marine ecological ranching in Sumatran waters, with Aceh serving as the primary demonstration site. This concept combines ecosystem conservation with efforts to sustainably boost fisheries productivity for the welfare of coastal communities.
Various strategic steps have been prepared, ranging from conservation area planning and artificial reef construction to the rehabilitation of seagrass beds and coral reef ecosystems. Beyond technical aspects, the program also encompasses periodic ecological monitoring and intensive training for local stakeholders to ensure effective marine resource management on the ground.
USK Vice Rector for Planning, Partnerships, and Business, Dr. Ramzi Adriman, emphasized that this partnership represents a concrete step by the university to strengthen international-standard research. According to him, Aceh's marine potential requires the touch of science, technology, and innovation to make a maximum contribution to the development of the blue economy in Indonesia.
Supported by qualified academic resources, USK is optimistic that this collaboration will create an applicable marine management model. More than just an exchange of research, the project is expected to deliver a sustainable impact on the welfare of fishermen while preserving marine ecosystems for the future.
