The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) officially denied the authenticity of a video recording circulating on various social media platforms. The short video showing a volcanic eruption filmed from a ship was narrated as eruption activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, but authorities confirmed that the content is inaccurate.
Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained that her team had conducted technical verification of the recording. As a result, the video was confirmed not to be documentation of recent volcanic activity from the volcano located in the Sunda Strait waters. The public is urged to be wiser in filtering information before spreading it to the public.
To date, the Geological Agency emphasized that all valid information regarding Mount Anak Krakatau originates solely from official PVMBG channels and the MAGMA Indonesia application. Monitoring data recorded only two small eruptions with an ash column height of around 200 meters recently, far from the dramatic narrative depicted in the fake video.
In addition to clarifying the video, the Geological Agency also straightened out issues regarding the expansion of the safe zone radius. Mount Anak Krakatau's current status remains at Level III (Alert), with the recommended danger zone remaining at a 3-kilometer radius from the eruption center. The public, fishermen, and tourists are strictly prohibited from carrying out activities within that radius to avoid potential threats such as incandescent material ejection and pyroclastic flows.
Lana also urged residents along the Banten and Lampung coasts not to fall for misleading rumors regarding potential tsunamis often associated with the volcano's activity. Local governments and the public are expected to remain calm, carry out daily activities as usual, and continuously monitor the latest developments through official government platforms.
