The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) officially clarified the circulation of a video recording on social media showing a powerful eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. In the short video, flashes of light and large bursts of fire are visible, claimed to have occurred in the Sunda Strait on Sunday (5/7/2026).
Based on technical verification results conducted by the authorities, the video has been confirmed as fake information or a hoax. Real-time monitoring data shows that Mount Anak Krakatau's activity in recent days has not shown any extreme significant increase. Only two minor eruptions were recorded, namely on Thursday (2/7/2026) and Friday (3/7/2026), with a relatively low ash column height of around 200 meters.
In addition to denying the authenticity of the video, the Geological Agency also clarified issues regarding the expansion of the safety zone to 5 kilometers, which had caused unrest among residents along the Banten and Lampung coasts. Authorities emphasized that as of now, the recommended safety radius remains set at 3 kilometers from the eruption center.
The government urges the public, fishermen, and tourists to remain calm and not be swayed by unverified narratives. To obtain accurate information regarding the current status of Mount Anak Krakatau, the public is asked to only access official channels from the Geological Agency, PVMBG, or the MAGMA Indonesia application.
