The Mimika Regency Government, through the Department of Youth and Sports (Dispora), has officially commenced the student sports competition series titled the 2026 Student Multi-Event and Single Event. The event, centered at the SP5 Futsal Arena (GOR), was symbolically opened by the Regent of Mimika, Johannes Rettob, on Wednesday (8/7/2026) and is scheduled to run until August 14.
The competition involves thousands of participants from elementary, middle, and high school/vocational school levels across the Mimika region. A total of seven sports branches are being contested: futsal, volleyball, 10-kilometer run, soccer, basketball, rowing, and karate. This activity is designed not merely to chase victory, but as a platform for character building in the younger generation.
Regent Johannes Rettob emphasized that the development of the sports sector is part of the government's priority to cultivate superior human resources. According to him, through this competition, students can foster values of discipline, honesty, sportsmanship, and responsibility as vital assets for the future. He hopes this event can become a structured sports development ecosystem, starting from the school level up to professional clubs.
Also present at the event was Papuan soccer legend Boaz Salossa, who provided motivation for the young athletes. Boaz believes that this event serves as a gateway for local talents from Mimika to showcase their best potential. He encouraged the students to compete seriously so that they can eventually bring honor to their region, and even Indonesia, on both national and international stages.
The Mimika Regency Government is committed to making this event an annual routine agenda. This step is expected to strengthen unity among students while promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as identifying talented young athletes ready to be developed more systematically in the future.
