The Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Central Lombok is further strengthening its position as a world-class sports tourism destination. Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports (Wamenpora), Taufik Hidayat, officially opened a new sports facility featuring padel courts built by the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) on Saturday (11/7/2026).
On that occasion, Taufik Hidayat emphasized that the government is fully committed to supporting the provision of sports facilities in tourist areas. According to him, this step aims not only to nurture high-achieving athletes in the future but also to encourage the growth of a sports industry that positively impacts the local economy.
Furthermore, Taufik explained that global tourism trends are shifting toward healthy lifestyles, where tourists no longer rely solely on natural attractions or international racing events such as MotoGP. The presence of facilities like padel courts is expected to serve as an additional attraction that encourages visitors to stay longer in Mandalika.
Meanwhile, Acting President Director of ITDC, Ahmad Fajar, revealed that the construction of this sports infrastructure is part of a long-term strategy to complement the tourism ecosystem in Mandalika. In addition to the three padel courts and one basketball court recently inaugurated, ITDC is also planning the construction of five additional padel courts in the Gunung area.
Ahmad Fajar stressed that synergy between natural potential, culture, gastronomy, and complete sports facilities is the key to making Mandalika a sustainable tourism destination. It is hoped that these facilities will be managed effectively to provide maximum benefits for both tourists and local residents.
