Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is strengthening its role in supporting national food sovereignty through the construction of cutting-edge research infrastructure. UGM Rector, Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, emphasized that the institution is fully committed to supporting government priorities in achieving food self-sufficiency through research commercialization and modernization of the agricultural sector amidst global climate challenges.
This strategic move is marked by the commencement of the construction of the Smart Eco Bioproduction Building at the UGM Faculty of Agriculture. Designed as a new paradigm in agriculture, the facility integrates artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and precision agriculture principles to enhance resource efficiency and sustainability. The Rector expressed hope that this facility will boost national horticultural competitiveness while strengthening domestic seed sovereignty.
Dean of the UGM Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Ir. Jaka Widada, stated that the building's construction represents a long-term investment in education and human resource development in agriculture. He stressed the importance of this facility as a hub for future generations to conduct practical scientific experiments beneficial to the broader community.
On another note, Vice Rector for Research, Business Development, and Cooperation, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, revealed the university's plan to accelerate plant breeding through the construction of seven new greenhouse units. Furthermore, UGM will consolidate researchers across various faculties to ensure that innovations, such as the newly harvested Premium Hybrid Melon seeds, continue to be developed sustainably.
The project's inauguration coincides with UGM's 80th Anniversary and 16th Lustrum celebrations. This milestone not only marks the start of physical construction but also symbolizes the success of translating campus research into tangible impacts for society and the national agricultural industry.
