Amid the influx of cheap imported products and the shift in shopping trends to digital platforms that have brought down many local brands, the name Yongki Komaladi stands firm. Entering the age of 70, this legendary shoe designer and entrepreneur shows no signs of retiring. His dedication to the national footwear industry, which has now spanned four decades, proves that consistency and adaptation are the main keys to survival.
Before being known as the nation's shoe maestro, Yongki began his career in the fashion scene as a model in the 1980s. Realizing that a modeling career has a time limit, he then shifted his focus to the shoe business with a high level of professional determination. Instead of doing it half-heartedly, Yongki chose to focus on studying the construction, patterns, and anatomy of the wearer's feet, rejecting various business offers outside footwear to become a specialist in his field.
During its golden era in the 1990s, the Yongki Komaladi brand became a symbol of urban lifestyle through designs that boldly explored unusual colors and materials, such as snakeskin. Using his own face as a promotional tool also proved effective in boosting his brand, eventually reaching 400 points of sale across Indonesia, which now stand at around 300 outlets post-COVID-19 pandemic.
The crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the toughest tests for his business's survival. However, instead of just saving personal profits, Yongki took a bold policy by allowing MSME (micro, small, and medium enterprises) partners to sell his products directly with thin margins to keep their stoves burning. For him, business is not just about making a profit, but about being a lifeline for around 2,000 workers whose livelihoods depend on his production chain.
Facing today's challenge of the flood of cheap imported products from China, Yongki chooses not to complain. Instead, he actively studies his competitors by visiting industrial centers in China, Vietnam, and Italy, while embracing digital platforms like TikTok and YouTube to keep his brand relevant to the younger generation.
