Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has firmly asked the government to heighten national preparedness standards amidst the rising volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. According to her, public safety must be placed as the top priority in facing the threat of this disaster.
Furthermore, Puan emphasized that the escalation of volcanic activity should serve as momentum for relevant agencies to conduct a comprehensive evaluation. She highlighted the importance of early warning system effectiveness, readiness of evacuation route infrastructure, and more integrated cross-sectoral coordination, particularly in the coastal areas of the Sunda Strait, which have a high history of vulnerability.
Puan also underscored the urgency of swift and accurate public communication. She hopes that data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), BMKG, and BNPB can be consistently conveyed to the public to prevent misinformation that could trigger panic among residents in affected zones.
In addition to the early warning system, mapping vulnerable communities is an equally important focus to optimize. This measure is expected to expedite the evacuation process in the event of an emergency, both for coastal residents and for maritime actors crossing the Sunda Strait route.
For context, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status of Mount Anak Krakatau to Level III (Alert). Monitoring data records at least 18 eruptions since early July 2026, requiring extra vigilance from all stakeholders.
