Volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, showed a significant increase again on Monday (6/7/2026) evening. The volcano spewed a column of volcanic ash up to 1,500 meters above the peak, accompanied by strong rumbling sounds that could be heard in nearby residential areas.
According to a report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption recorded at 18:55 WITA produced a thick gray ash column. Volcanic material consisting of ash, sand, and gravel reportedly showered several villages on the slopes of the mountain, carried by the wind to the north and northeast.
The impact of this eruption was quite widespread, forcing relevant authorities to close operations at two airports on Flores Island to ensure aviation safety. Currently, seismograph instruments have recorded a maximum amplitude of 29.6 mm with a duration of tremors reaching 125 seconds, confirming that the volcano's status remains at Level III (Alert).
In response to the situation, volcano observation post officers along with the local government issued strict instructions for both residents and tourists. All activities within a five-kilometer radius of the eruption center are strictly prohibited to avoid the risk of danger from ejected material and heavy exposure to thick volcanic ash.
