Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, reportedly erupted again on Thursday (2/7/2026) evening. This volcanic phenomenon was accompanied by pyroclastic flows extending up to 4 kilometers from the summit.
According to an official report from the Mount Semeru Observation Post, the eruption occurred at 16:37 WIB. A white-to-gray ash column was observed rising 1,500 meters above the peak, reaching 5,176 meters above sea level. The activity was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
As of now, Mount Semeru remains at Alert Status Level III (Siaga). Volcanological authorities reaffirmed a strict ban on all public activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center.
In addition to the threat of pyroclastic flows, residents are urged to avoid any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the main crater to prevent risks from incandescent rock ejections. The public is also advised to stay vigilant against secondary hazards, such as lava flows and lahars along river channels originating from the summit, including Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat.
