Volcanic activity at Mount Semeru in East Java increased again on Wednesday (10/6/2026). According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the tallest volcano on Java Island erupted at 06:30 WIB.
Visual reports showed a column of volcanic ash rising up to 1,000 meters above the peak, or approximately 4,676 meters above sea level. The white-to-gray ash column with thick intensity was observed moving north and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 113 seconds.
As of now, Mount Semeru's alert status remains at Level III (Siaga/Alert). High seismic activity has been recorded from the early morning until 06:00 WIB, including 16 eruption earthquakes, 3 gust earthquakes, and 2 harmonic earthquakes.
PVMBG emphasized the importance of public compliance with safe zone recommendations. Residents are strictly prohibited from conducting any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius of the eruption center. In addition, the public is advised to maintain a distance of 500 meters from riverbanks along the flow to anticipate the risk of expanding pyroclastic flows and lahar flows, which could reach up to 17 kilometers.
MAGMA Indonesia records show that throughout 2026, Mount Semeru has been the most active volcano in the country, with a total of 1,219 eruptions out of 2,491 volcanic eruptions recorded across Indonesia.
