The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has officially announced a temporary closure of the Mount Semeru hiking trail. This step is taken to respect the series of Karo Festival celebrations taking place in Ranupane Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, this coming August.
According to official statements, hiking access will be closed starting Friday, August 7, 2026, until Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The Head of BB TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that this decision refers to a request from the Ranupane Village Government to maintain the solemnity and sacredness of the Tengger community's traditional ceremonies.
All hikers are required to complete their activities and descend to the Ranupane area by Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB at the latest. For prospective hikers affected by this closure, particularly those who had previously rescheduled their hike following the 2025 eruption, the management provides a policy to reschedule again, the mechanism of which will be communicated through their respective group leaders.
Although the main hiking trail is closed, authorities confirmed that tourism activities in the Ranu Regulo area will continue to operate normally. After the traditional ceremonies conclude, the Mount Semeru hiking trail is scheduled to reopen to the public on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, via the online registration system on the official website bromotenggersemeru.id.
Acting Head of Ranupane Village, Bambang Sugianto, stated that this closure policy is crucial to ensuring safety, order, and the smooth flow of traditional rituals handed down through generations. Synergy between traditional institutions and TNBTS officers will be further strengthened to ensure the area remains protected during the celebration period.
