Facing the challenges of rising global temperatures and the increasingly extreme frequency of heatwaves, climate adaptation strategies through passive cooling technologies have now become urgent. Over-reliance on air conditioning (AC) units is no longer considered a sustainable sole solution, given its significant impact on electricity consumption spikes and greenhouse gas emissions.

Urban heat mitigation expert from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Mat Santamouris, emphasizes that while AC is vital for safety during extreme weather, uncontrolled use actually worsens the urban warming phenomenon. He stresses the need for a paradigm shift, where buildings must be designed to maintain cool temperatures naturally without relying entirely on mechanical systems.

In a scientific review published in Nature Reviews Clean Technology, Santamouris outlines various passive cooling innovations, such as radiative cooling materials, smart ventilation systems, and smart infrared technologies. The implementation of these technologies is claimed to be capable of lowering peak temperatures in urban areas by up to 4.5 degrees Celsius while simultaneously improving thermal comfort for residents.

The most effective strategy, according to the study, is to prevent heat from entering buildings in the first place through climate-responsive architectural design. By integrating shading and reflective materials, the energy demand for space cooling is predicted to be reduced by up to 80 percent. This approach not only reduces the load on the electricity grid but also enhances the resilience of buildings to cope with future power outages.
