OpenAI has officially introduced its newest line of voice models, namely GPT-Live-1 and its more compact version, GPT-Live-1 mini. This innovation is designed to deliver an artificial intelligence (AI) interaction experience that is much more fluid, responsive, and closer to real-time human communication patterns.

One of the crucial updates in this model is the implementation of full-duplex technology. With this system support, devices are now able to listen and process responses simultaneously. This grants users the freedom to interrupt conversations whenever necessary and supports the effectiveness of real-time language translation features without significant delay.

ChatGPT Voice Product Lead, Atty Eleti, stated that the company's long-term vision is to make voice the primary user interface for communicating with computers. More than just a communication tool, this model is projected to become an assistant capable of autonomously executing complex tasks over longer durations.

As a transitional step, OpenAI has set GPT-Live-1 mini as the new standard for the voice feature on ChatGPT. Meanwhile, paid service users will gain exclusive access to the GPT-Live-1 model, which possesses larger processing capacity.

Unlike its predecessor system, which still relied on a conventional workflow of converting speech to text in stages, this latest model is directly integrated with cutting-edge AI generations, including GPT-5.5. This integration allows the system to perform reasoning, data retrieval, and agentic task execution in the background without interrupting the ongoing conversation flow.
