The Bali Branch of the Indonesian Association of Ophthalmologists (Perdami) organized a series of social services offering free eye examinations and cataract surgeries at the Wantilan Serbaguna Pasar Yadnya, Blahbatuh District, Gianyar, on Sunday (5/7/2026). This event is part of the celebration of Perdami's 62nd Service Day, as well as the launch of the 2nd Perdami Service Month, held simultaneously across Indonesia.
Carrying the theme 'One Doctor One Sight', this humanitarian action involved the active participation of 114 ophthalmologists in Bali, supported by young medical personnel. This program was made possible through a strategic collaboration between Perdami Bali and the John Fawcett Foundation, targeting 200 residents in need of eye health services. As of the first day, four patients had undergone cataract surgery after passing a series of medical screenings.
Committee Chairperson, dr. Cynthia Dewi M, Sp.M, explained that this activity aims to expand access to eye healthcare for the community while increasing literacy regarding the importance of early detection of visual impairment. The services provided include health screening, counseling, distribution of glasses, and cataract surgeries for patients who meet medical indications.
Chairperson of Perdami Bali, dr. Cokorda Istri Dewiyani P., Sp.M (K), added that the activity also included screening for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. She emphasized that education is the key to vision recovery, especially in cataract cases, which can be managed more optimally if detected at an early stage.
Interestingly, the entire funding for this event came from the mutual contribution of ophthalmologists in Bali as a form of social care from the profession. The Perdami Service Month is scheduled to run until August 5, 2026, with the entire sequence of activities, from registration to post-operative evaluation, prepared for a MURI (Indonesian World Records Museum) record submission for the most widespread simultaneous cataract surgeries in Indonesia.
