The National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has officially strengthened its synergistic relationship with Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). This step was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the KONI DIY Office on Friday (3/7/2026), which aims to accelerate the development of regional sports achievements through academic and medical approaches.
The General Chairperson of KONI DIY, K.G.P.A.A. Paku Alam X, emphasized that progress in sports achievements is the fruit of multidimensional collaboration. According to him, support from the education and health sectors is crucial to guarantee the future of athletes while maintaining their physical condition during training periods. He hopes this partnership can be implemented into measurable real programs, rather than just administrative ceremonies.
Echoing this sentiment, the Rector of UMY, Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., stated that his institution is ready to mobilize all campus resources to support KONI DIY. UMY is committed to providing sports-specific specialist medical personnel, especially for handling athletes from branches with a high risk of injury, as well as opening broad access for athletes to pursue higher education through special scholarship programs.
In addition to health and education aspects, this collaboration also focuses on strengthening sports research and data collection. Prof. Nurmandi highlighted the need for comprehensive data as a foundation for formulating strategic policies. With deep research, it is hoped that the sports ecosystem in Yogyakarta can develop more effectively and have stronger competitiveness at the national level.
