The utilization of nuclear technology in the medical field in Indonesia is now entering a crucial phase. Through the use of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, nuclear medicine has shifted the healthcare paradigm from reactive to more predictive and precise. This approach enables medical personnel to map biological activity at the cellular level, even before physical symptoms of a disease appear in the patient.
Amid the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer, the presence of this technology is crucial. Global Cancer Observatory data records hundreds of thousands of new cancer cases in Indonesia every year. With nuclear medicine, doctors can identify diseases more accurately, which ultimately increases patient recovery chances while reducing long-term treatment cost burdens.
National self-reliance in this sector is supported by three research reactors managed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), namely the TRIGA 2000 Reactor, the Kartini Reactor, and the GA Siwabessy Multipurpose Reactor. These strategic facilities enable Indonesia to produce medical radioisotopes independently while reducing dependence on global supply chains that are highly sensitive to radioactive material half-lives.
Despite its great potential, equitable access remains a primary challenge. Currently, nuclear medicine services are still concentrated in several major cities, leaving patients in remote areas often facing obstacles to acquiring prompt diagnosis access. The short half-life nature of radioactive materials demands precise logistical coordination between production centers, distribution, and hospitals.
Addressing these challenges, the government through the Ministry of Health continues to strengthen strategic collaborations, including cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This step focuses on expanding facilities, improving healthcare worker competence, and strengthening nuclear medicine infrastructure evenly across various provinces as part of a more resilient and equitable national health transformation.
