To date, the public is still waiting for the release of the latest national history book compiled by the Ministry of Culture. Despite being officially launched in mid-December 2025, the historical document expected to serve as an educational reference is not yet accessible to the wider public.
The government had previously committed that a digital version of this national history book would be available no later than two months after the launch. However, as the promised deadline has passed, the accessibility of the government's official historical narrative remains a question for many.
This delay has sparked public scrutiny, particularly regarding transparency in history writing, including how the narrative of the May 1998 riots—which frequently sparks debate regarding historical perspectives in Indonesia—is presented in the book. Discussions about the book's content had previously surfaced in an academic forum at the University of Indonesia some time ago.
As of the time of writing, there has been no further official statement from the Ministry of Culture regarding technical or administrative obstacles hindering the digital publication. The public hopes the government will promptly fulfill its commitment so that the rewritten national history can be studied and reviewed openly by all elements of the nation.
