Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK), which has shown increased intensity over the past week, has prompted the community on Sebesi Island, Lampung, to heighten their vigilance. To anticipate the impacts of eruptions that often occur at night, the local village government has now instructed all hamlets to conduct routine night watches.
The Head of Tejang Village, Syamsiar, stated that the rumbling sounds of the mountain's eruptions, located about 25 kilometers from residential areas, are often clearly audible. The night watch initiative is a mitigation effort to ensure that residents can evacuate promptly if at any time conditions indicate a significant increase in threat.
In addition to the watch system, the village government has also ensured that the disaster mitigation infrastructure on Sebesi Island is in a state of readiness. Evacuation routes and direction signs have been socialized to residents so they understand the actions to take when an emergency occurs. Given the dark history of the 2018 tsunami, residents are now paying close attention to every development in the volcano's status.
Based on data from the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post, volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait is still observed to be active. Although certain observation periods show relatively calm intensity, Geological Agency instruments still record volcanic earthquakes. This condition keeps fishermen, tourism operators, and residents along the coasts of Lampung and Banten on high alert.
