Mount Anak Krakatau is back in the spotlight after recording a series of intensive eruptions throughout July 2026. A total of 12 eruptions were recorded in a short period, sparking concern among residents on the coasts of Banten and Lampung who still bear deep trauma from the 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami disaster.
Responding to this situation, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has set the status to Level III (Alert). Members of the public, tourists, and fishermen are urged to comply with the exclusion zone within a three-kilometer radius of the active crater to avoid the risk of exposure to volcanic material harmful to respiratory health.
Despite the increase in volcanic activity, volcanologists have provided reassuring views. ITB volcanologist Mirzam Abdurrachman explained that the current physical condition of Mount Anak Krakatau is different from 2018. Because the volcano's body has not yet reached a height that could trigger a massive collapse, the potential for a large tsunami is considered very minimal.
"Mount Anak Krakatau is a young volcano that is growing. The eruptions that occur are a natural phenomenon for the volcano to build up its body mass," said senior volcanologist Surono. He emphasized that this natural beauty can still be enjoyed as long as the public follows the safety guidelines established by local authorities.
On the ground, local government authorities, including the Serang Regency Government and the Lampung Regional Police, continue to strengthen early warning systems and disaster mitigation. Public education regarding the dangers of hoax information related to the eruption is also being intensified to maintain the social and economic stability of coastal communities who rely on the marine and tourism sectors.
The long history of Krakatau, from the colossal eruption of 1883 to the emergence of its 'child' in 1927, serves as a reminder of the raw power of Earth's geological forces. However, with close monitoring and continuously updated mitigation preparedness, the public is expected to coexist harmoniously and alertly with the volcano's activity.
