The volcanic activity of Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, has shown a significant increase in the past 24 hours. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), using seismic instruments, recorded 91 seismic events during the monitoring period.
Based on the compiled data, the seismic phenomena were dominated by 73 eruptions, 7 avalanches, 9 gust emissions, and 2 tremor vibrations. The team on the ground currently continues to conduct an in-depth evaluation of the data to anticipate the potential emergence of pyroclastic flows (APG) that could occur at any time.
The Head of BPBD Lumajang, Isnugroho, stated that officers at the Mount Semeru Volcano Observation Post remain on full 24-hour alert to monitor the latest developments. Residents living around the slopes of the mountain are asked to remain calm and not be provoked by unverified information.
"Overall, the current situation of Mount Semeru is declared to remain safe and under control," said Isnugroho on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Up to now, the status of Mount Semeru remains at Level III or Alert. As a mitigation measure, the public and tourists are strictly prohibited from conducting activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the crater center. Specifically for the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan riverbed, the safety zone is set up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the mountain peak.
