Volcanic activity at Mount Semeru in East Java has shown a significant increase again on Thursday (18/6/2026). Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the highest volcano on Java Island was recorded to have erupted three consecutive times in less than two hours.
The series of eruptions began at 05:26 WIB, spewing an ash column 900 meters above the peak, or approximately 4,576 meters above sea level. This phenomenon was followed by a second eruption at 06:36 WIB, which launched white to gray ash to a height of 800 meters.
Just three minutes later, at 06:39 WIB, Mount Semeru erupted again with greater intensity. This third eruption produced an ash column 1,000 meters high, observed moving toward the north with a dominant thick gray color.
Until now, authorities continue to conduct intensive monitoring of Mount Semeru's status. The public and hikers are advised to always adhere to safety recommendations from PVMBG and remain vigilant regarding the potential for volcanic material ejection and pyroclastic flows that could occur at any time.
