Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, recorded a significant increase in volcanic activity on Wednesday (1/7/2026). Throughout the day, the highest mountain on Java Island erupted four times, with the highest ash column reaching one kilometer above the summit.
Data from the Mount Semeru Observation Post indicated that the first eruption occurred at 00:52 WIB with an ash height of 700 meters. The intensity of the eruptions continued to increase, peaking at 09:24 WIB and 10:10 WIB, when the eruption column reached a height of one kilometer, or approximately 4,676 meters above sea level. To date, Semeru's volcanic activity status remains at Level III (Alert).
Chief Executive of BPBD Lumajang, Isnugroho, confirmed that there have been no reports of significant impacts from the volcanic ash distribution on residential areas so far. Nevertheless, the government continues to enforce strict disaster mitigation protocols for local residents.
Authorities emphasized a strict prohibition against residents conducting activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. Additionally, the public is urged to stay at least 500 meters away from riverbanks along the lahar flow paths to avoid the risk of pyroclastic flows and lava avalanches that could occur at any time.
