MAGETAN — Facing the threat of forest and land fires (karhutla) that often loom during the dry season, a total of 125 joint officers were deployed to the Mount Lawu area, Magetan Regency, East Java. This preventive measure was implemented by creating a 4.5-kilometer-long firebreak (ilaran) around the Cemoro Sewu climbing route.
The creation of this physical barrier is designed to cut off the spread of fire in the event of a wildfire. In addition to preventing the forest ecosystem from being scorched by fire, the existence of this firebreak is crucial for protecting natural vegetation and saving vital water sources located in the Mount Lawu area.
Not only focusing on physical mitigation in the field, officers are also tightening supervision over human activities in the mountain area. Climbers passing through are now urged more strictly and strictly forbidden from lighting campfires or engaging in activities that trigger sparks to avoid negligence that could potentially trigger a major fire disaster.
