The Faculty of Agroindustry at Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMBY) successfully organized the "Agroindustry Festival" on Friday (3/7/2026). The event, which took place in the campus area, served as a platform for more than 250 students from three study programs—Agrotechnology, Animal Husbandry, and Integrated Agricultural Field Work (KLPT)—to showcase their work.
A total of 44 booths were set up to decorate the festival, displaying various products ranging from cultivated organic vegetables to a variety of ready-to-eat processed foods. A unique feature that caught visitors' attention was the transaction system, where buyers were required to exchange their rupiah currency for coconut shell coins to make payments on-site.
The Dean of the Faculty of Agroindustry at UMBY, Prof. Dr. Chatarina Lilis Suryani, S.TP., M.P., stated that this festival is the realization of the faculty's signature course. Through this event, students are guided to understand the agricultural industry supply chain in its entirety, from upstream—namely the cultivation system—to downstream, which is the marketing strategy, in order to produce graduates with an agrosociopreneur spirit.
KLPT lecturer, Dr. Yuli Perwita Sari, S.TP., explained that the students spent a semester practicing hands-on cultivation of chickens as well as horticultural commodities such as eggplant, corn, and various types of spinach. In addition to showcasing the harvest, the lecturers gave awards to the best-performing groups, measured by feed efficiency to harvest quality, to teach the importance of implementing good farming practices.
On the other hand, the students participating in the festival gained valuable experience regarding the dynamics of the business world. Pandu Ragil, an Agrotechnology student, admitted that the challenges of managing financial administration and marketing for a semester provided highly meaningful practical skills. Despite demanding hard work, direct involvement in the entire agricultural ecosystem is considered a solid first step toward launching a business in the future.
