The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) has confirmed it will immediately hit the gas in drafting the revision of the Election Law. Deputy Speaker of the House, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, revealed that his side has scheduled a political tour to several non-parliamentary political parties to gather crucial input regarding the regulation.
This strategic move is scheduled to take place during the lawmakers' recess period, which will begin on July 22, 2026. Dasco emphasized that the visits would be part of the House's specific work agenda to ensure that all elements of political parties, including those without parliamentary seats, contribute their ideas to the revision process.
Echoing Dasco's statements, Deputy Chairman of House Commission II, Aria Bima, explained that the discussion on this revision encompasses various fundamental issues. Key focus topics include reviewing the parliamentary threshold, the presidential threshold, as well as mechanisms for determining electoral districts and seat allocation in each constituency.
As of now, House Commission II continues to refine the academic paper and the draft bill. Although the government, through the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, expressed readiness to step in as the initiator if legislative discussions hit a dead end, the DPR insists that the Election Law revision is a pure legislative initiative already included in the 2026 National Legislation Program.
The drafting of this regulation is considered urgent given that the stages for conducting the 2029 General Election must begin soon. Referring to applicable regulations, election stages should ideally be underway at least 20 months before voting day, expected to fall in February 2029. Therefore, political consolidation during the recess period is a crucial step to ensure the electoral legal framework is finalized on time.
