The Mount Bromo tourist area, specifically in the Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir) region, Probolinggo Regency, East Java, recently caught public attention after video footage showed a unique natural phenomenon. The video shows a vortex of wind carrying sand and dust rotating rapidly, resembling a small-scale tornado moving across the desert surface.
Meteorologically, this phenomenon is known as a dust devil or dust swirl. This occurrence commonly appears during the dry season, triggered by intense solar heating of the earth's surface. The heat trapped on the sand surface creates temperature differences that trigger the formation of the vertical wind vortex.
In response to the viral video, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Probolinggo Regency responded quickly. Although this phenomenon generally does not possess the destructive power of a tornado, authorities still issued an appeal for tourists to increase their vigilance.
Tourists are advised to stay away immediately if they see a similar swirl to avoid airborne dust materials. As a precautionary measure, visitors are also recommended to equip themselves with protective gear, such as face masks for breathing, goggles to protect eyes from dust irritation, and body-covering clothing for comfort during activities in the Sea of Sand area.
