The deeply rooted cultural spirit of the agrarian community reached its peak once again through the 25th Five Mountains Festival (FLG). This time, Warangan Village, located on the slopes of Mount Merbabu, Magelang, Central Java, became the main stage for farmer-artists to display their creativity in a stunning cultural parade on Sunday (12/7/2026).
This annual event serves as a gathering point for artists from five iconic mountain regions in Central Java: Merapi, Merbabu, Menoreh, Andong, and Sumbing. Through a variety of traditional art performances, they reinforce their local identity and collective efforts to preserve cultural arts amidst the tide of modernization.
A defining hallmark and core strength of this festival is its principle of self-reliance. The entire series of events for the 25th FLG was independently organized by the community. Without financial support from corporate sponsors, the success of the event stems purely from the spirit of mutual cooperation and the tangible contributions of local residents who hold a deep love for art.
The presence of this festival is not merely seasonal entertainment, but a manifestation of cultural resilience from farmers who remain productive in the fields while being creative on stage. To this day, the Five Mountains Festival continues to prove that art rooted in the people, by the people, and for the people possesses a vitality that transcends all financial limitations.
