Mount Karangetang, located in Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands Regency (Sitaro), North Sulawesi, was reported to have shown volcanic activity again in the form of an explosive eruption on Sunday (12/7/2026) night. The natural event was recorded occurring at 19:20 WITA.
Based on reports from officers of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), this eruption spewed fairly intense incandescent lava material. The phenomenon caused the sky around the mountain area to turn reddish, as seen in circulating visual documentation.
Until now, a team from the Karangetang Volcano Observation Post (PGA) is still in the field conducting intensive monitoring. Authorities are also continuing to strengthen coordination with relevant agencies as a disaster mitigation step to minimize risks for the surrounding community.
Although the volcanic activity is considered significant, authorities confirmed that as of this writing, there are no reports of casualties due to the eruption. Currently, a technical team is preparing a detailed report regarding the developments in the mountain's status and the impacts after the event.
